Dear All Test Triathletes,
A big thank you to all who participated, marshalled and set up the course for our test race yesterday (Pat, Doug and Nicky paricularly) - overall it was a great success with plenty of feedback and comments on how to improve things. This was the aim of the event, a race tested by the athletes. If you can add further comments please post them here, all suggestions/comments will be considered.
Thanks again.
Brian PS - Can we check McCool timing solutions results......... I thought there was a time penalty handed out??

Feedback
Firstly thanks to Pat, Brian and all the timekeepers, marshalls yesterday. Was a great morning for all of us I think.
What a fantastic venue !
Would agree wholeheartedly with Michaels comments. Swim course needs to be tweaked a small bit and pushed out a little as well. Also not sure about the accuracy of the distance. Felt more like about 650 but maybe the currents had something to do with it.
The bike course was brilliant.
The run whilst beautiful and with loads of hills is a little complicated. Even with proper marshalling, with 300 plus runners taking part, someone will almost certainly go wrong, particularly if they are running back on a route just completed as was the case yesterday to a small degree. Their are 3/4 brilliant natural routes in Belvedere so would definitely suggest that is looked at in more detail. Again I would guess that the distance ran yesterday was about 5.3 km ish !
Perhaps transition and finish in front of the lake could be looked at. What a dramatic scene in which to have spectators viewing and finishers finishing ...
Anyway, in summary I think it was a great exercise. And is without doubt a brilliant venue.
Gerry

Yeh...well done guys and thanks a million for a super super morning.
I for one really enjoyed it. I'd agree with Gerry about the run though it is a little complicated and maybe a little tough for tri to beat as its more a fun day out. But other than that its a fantastic course the swim and bike were great and the run if changed slightly is absolutely beautiful.
To be honest i'd say its the nicest setting for a triathlon that i've done anyway in my short career !!!...so fair play to ya guys...hopefully it will be a great day.
Thanks again.

Yeah, yesterday was great and well organised, thanks folks.
But there was less than 20 of us participating. I don't think the current set up will accommodate 250 entries (think that's the field size for tritobeat). I was discussing the course last night with other athletes and we'd the same idea as Gerry, put transition down on the grass by the lake front. I don't think the small patch in front of the Jealous Wall will hold 250 bikes, and it's a very narrow spot for a transition area.
Moving the transition would also do away with the 200 metre run up a road after the swim.

hmmm, I agree that putting the transition/finish line at the lake would be more crowd friendly but it would mean that when returning from the bike the path from entering the gates to getting down to the finish would be just 1 long free wheel ... probably not a problem as this is a fun event but it will make it very technical and particularly daunting for the majority of people doing this "fun" event. I don't really like the idea of the run from the swim to the bike but I did not find it too bad yesterday. Maybe the run finish can be at the lake?
I also agree that the run was quite complex but I think if it's well marshalled/signposted on the day it will not be a problem getting around. I absolutely loved it, especially jumping the stream ... it took 30 years of me ... I felt like a kid again and highlights the point of all this in the first place ... to have a bit of fun.
All in all though, I am a lot more convinced of the location today, the pros far outweigh the cons!!

Some general thoughts:
Firstly thanks to all the marshalls timekeepers and general organisers who ran the event.
Swim - I reckon the first buoy could be moved a couple of degrees to the left if possible so as to accomodate the large field. The other buoys position semed to be in the right line as you could swim within 5 metres or so of the shore unlike at lilliput whereby you wind up walking /wading for a greater distance through water. The stones werent too bad but I reckon a morning could be spent moving some of the larger stones. The sand on the shore was a great addition.
The bike section was excellent, great roads and nice to have two laps of this. The only other thing is the re-entry to belvedre as centre pillar could present a problem as the fastest cyclists will surely be meeting the slower swimmers as they leave on their cycle thru the gates, we may have to apply european road rules at the gate.
As a non-running fan the run was tough especially the cross country section, definitely felt longer than 5K. Almost got lost at the gothic arch and distance remaining signs would be a welcome addition.
In terms of T-zone ideas, I agree with the lads regarding the area in front of the lake. If the gravel paths were tarred the bikes could possibly follow the molesworth trail (is that its name cos the map on the belvedere website aint good) around the side of the house and out the gate. Also competiors emerging from the forest to a lakeshore finish would look spectacular.
However regardless of the course we still have to remember that this is a charity event and that a lot of the spectators would be out to support the charity and friends/family who are most likely first time triathletes so the finish should best try accomodate this.

Guys thanks for taking part in the trial on Sunday , and for the feedback which is crucial . Just to let you know that I measured the course this evening with a digital wheel and it is 4.923 km . Well done Pat,(never mind Anne Coleman , your GPS device is not a figment of your imagination )

Just to let you know that I measured the course this evening with a digital wheel and it is 4.923 km . By any chance did you take Mick Duggan's short cut while measuring it? 23 minutes for 5K....I'm getting slow!

Why not use run league route? We know its 5k and also more importantly that it can accommodate the numbers and less twisting and turning and less marshills required. Its a great route. After all the changes lets test it again and "SEE IF COLM CAN CATCH ME" this time.!
