Run/Walk
Katherine Kenny (Lakeside Wheelers Club Chair) asked me to forward the following communication for a sponsored 8k run/walk. I am reliably informed the race is open to Men. Don’t forget your ear plugs at the start line!!!
‘Just want to let you know of a forthcoming event club members might be interested in. Our friends in the Columb Barracks Mullingar have announced a 5mile run/walk for Saturday 28th February.
The event is being held to raise funds and awareness for the stroke unit at the hospital.
Registration will take place in Columb Barracks from 9 o’clock on, and entrants will be bussed out to the start at Belvedere house and gardens. The race will begin by OC 4 Fd Arty Regt, Lt Col Arthur Armstrong to the sound of a ceremonial 25 Ponder Gun been fired. The route will be from the beautiful grounds of Belvedere House, down by Bloomfield Hotel, and left at Lynn Cross Roads, along the road to Kilpatrick Bridge, in the Athlone Road and left at the roundabout, across Ardleigh and in the Ashe Road to finish at the Columb Barracks Mullingar. The coordinator for this event is Regt Sgt Major Noel O Callaghan, 086 3581634, BS Tommy Owens and Sgt Garry Madden from Columb Barracks, or Dr Sean Murphy, Consultant Physician, Director of Stroke Service and Katherine Kenny from Mullingar Hospital.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ring.
Stroke is the 3rd commonest cause of death in Ireland and the commonest cause of neurological disability in the community. Each year in Ireland, there are about 10,000 hospital discharges for stroke. In recent years, there has been a belated realisation that active treatment and rehabilitation can greatly improve the outlook of patients with stroke. Treatment of acute stroke patients in a Stroke Unit can reduce the risk of death or severe disability by 25%. All stroke patients have the potential to benefit from this intervention.
The Irish National Audit on Stroke Care 2008 showed that only 1 acute hospital in Ireland, out of a total of 37, had a Stroke Unit. If all Irish stroke patients were treated in Stroke Units there would be 350-500 fewer patients dead or disabled each year. Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar has an organised Stroke Service since late 2006. The HSE is due to open a new 4 bed Acute Stroke Unit in Mullingar in the first half of 2009.
Men are more than welcome to participate as well....
Regards
Katherine

That’s all folks (for the moment). See you all at the weekly training sessions (details on the website under the, yep you guessed it again, the ‘Training 2009’ link!)
Final reminder not to ‘relpy to all’ with this message. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Brian Ivory
