Hi folks,
i seen this on Xtri.com. it describes the number 1 reason that i would miss a session and then other subsequent sessions in my training block. and fall into a few days of not eating properly.
=========================================
Sometimes you have to play with the (bad!) cards you are dealt with and make the most out of it. Being short in time or energy for a workout is one of those situations.
There are virtually countless reasons that can make you miss a workout. Longer meetings at the office, bad weather, family commitments, traffic jams and the #1 reason, deep fatigue that makes you procrastinate and when you realize you are only more tired it is too late to head out and complete the full set. But just as often, you can still “do something”, if you had a 90min bike ride scheduled, and you are left with a 40min window to train, MAKE THE MOST OUT OF IT!
There are many reasons why doing little is better than skipping the workout all together:
1-You stay away from the vicious cycle of rest+training too hard: If instead of doing something short you decide to take the day off, you will feel super guilty and probably try to make it up for the following session (or even cramming the session on the following day). What happens is with the extra rest you had when you missed the session, your body is fresher than it is supposed to be, and you are motivated to train harder, since as a dedicated athlete, you have problems just letting it go.
The result is a super strong session on the day after, which will really kill you and put yourself in that deep fatigue state, when you become more lazy than normal, and tend to miss sessions more often, and the cycle never ends.
2-You maintain fitness: With 40min sessions, you won’t become super fit, but you can for sure stimulate the energy system you were going to use in the session, which will keep that system firing up to the following workout, so although you won’t get much fitter, you won’t lose fitness either.
If for example on that day you were supposed to go for a ride in the hills, but are left with 40min at home, set your bike on the trainer, and do a big gear set to recruit strength and simulate the load that riding uphill would give you. Always stick to the energy system you were suppose to be training on that day.
3-You stick to your routine and good habits: You probably realized that when you are most tired (number 1 reason to miss a session) or when you just miss your session for any other reason, you tend to go to bed later, or eat more junk food. It feels that if you get out of routine, everything goes downhill. This is another reason why the shorter 30-40min workout is MUCH better than missing the session all together. You keep yourself on track, organized, with good sleeping/nutrition habits going on.
So next time you are left with only 30min instead of the 2h long run scheduled on your training plan, think again before calling it a day, it will make a huge difference down the road.

just thought i'd share it as i think a lot of people probably do the same as me
