Hi All,
Below is a brief report from this weekends Tri in Rosses point.
I received the Race briefing by email on the 21st with the following comments:
“The weather is looking promising at the moment. Varying reports are stating mid teens with plenty of sunshine and some light showers. The most interesting part is the winds really look very light and for Rosses Point that's unusual. The wind gods are saying float like conditions and that will mean super biking conditions. The water will be cold but with limited winds and a little bit of sunshine the conditions will be super fast.”
Fast forward to Saturday morning and none of the above was visible!! It was cold, raining and blustery winds so far from ideal racing conditions.
Because the water was so cold the swim was officially shortened to 1200m, Swim conditions were pretty calm and thankfully I got through it without any problems. (I hate the taste of salthingyer and believe me I got plenty of it). More on the swim later…
The bike course was 3 lops of a 12km circuit with the turnaround about 1km from the finish. Main road section was nice and fast. About 4km in you turned off the main road straight into a short climb followed by some smaller climbs and some dangerous bends. Thankfully this all went ok (did I mention it was cold, wet and windy).
The run was 2 x4.5km laps and then 1km to the finish. From transition you turned left, downhill to the beach then ran along the sand for about 800m to a turnaround point and then back into Roses point village and repeat. At the end of the second lap there was another turnaround poit with a one km sprint to the finish. And was I glad to cross that finish line.
Anyway back to the swim, while officially it was shortened to 1200m, I’m sorry there was no way this was just 1200m. Conditions were fine; I swam comfortably and emerged from the water in about 34 mins. (No way I was that slow for 1200m). Talking to few people afterwards (The Garmin Swim watch brigade) and most of them put it at about 1700m and this is what I’m going with too…
All in all, not the most enjoyable race I ever did, but then again “if it doesn’t kill ya....... “
PS: no complaints about the organisation, setup etc and the Chicken curry served in the Sligo Yacht club afterwards was heavenly.
