It really did feel like Hell - from what I heard the swim was a bit more than the usual 1500m and the 45km bike was brutal. All those couple of hundred people who passed me on the bike on the way out would have seen a happy boy, who was all pleased with the initial 20km, but the 50-60 who passed me on the way back in, would have seen a very unhappy boy - as Nicky glided past me, he would have seen that face. And then, someone decided to put a big hill outside T2 and make us run up it for 5km. Scenery was nice, I saw enough of it as I walked up the hill! Many thanks to Paul McC for 'encouragment' at the 5km marker! People who werent there wont understand fully how good those times are. Not to pick any one person out, but Wayne, Mick, Nicky and Doug were immense, cos it really was Hell in the West!

At last we found an "up hill" swim - I think the swim was 45 km !! What a great week-end for all the Midlanders who competed in this race Well done to everybody

Phil, Great pics!!! Thanks to those who took them. I notices a big difference in the faces of folks before the swim and how they looked after the swim? Maybe it was the sea sickness Brian I

Just a short report on my experience taking part in the"hell of the west"(to keep Killian happy)! This was my first time to do this race and yes the most difficult to date. All Olympic races I've done so far had two swim laps so this one did look quite daunting and rough but surprisedly it wasn't too bad. As with Killian I was very pleased with my bike start outward bound and in fact reached speeds of up to 60 KPH with the wind behind!.The bike route was very hilly and when I turned for home at around 25 KM mark it was against a very strong head wind the whole way back to T2.In its own way it really did seem as bad as our famous "CUT".I played cat and mouse with 2 fellow triathletes for about 7 Km, they would catch me on the uphill ride and I them on the downhill, it seemed so funny! From the start of the swim to T2 I didn't come across any of my fellow midlanders,"WHERE WERE THEY ALL"?That was soon to change on the run! There they were, all of them! The expressions on our faces said it all! We edged each other on an in fact clapped hands together to show solidarity. It was the most difficult 10K i had ever done! uphill for 5K and downhill for the remaining 5K. I was happy with myself on the day and I really think we all did so well.I do have to mention one person in particular and thats Nicky. He was my hero on the day!. I left Kilkee on Monday afternoon and it was so quiet and truly deserted and yes I did go up that 10k run again before i left! like i didn't have enough!.
