Interesting observations Douglas. To clarify however 1. I suggested we do it 4 times not 3 ! 2. It was a marathon not a sprint so don't be taking all the credit just because you finished in the top 6 on the FIRST of THREE climbs... 3. Picnic, what picnic £$%"£$!!!!!!!!! By the way yes I did see the gloves..noticed a small metal chain, which appeared to be severed, hanging off both gloves...Anything you want to tell us On a serious note yeah it was a fantastic day ( I joke not) I love those days...tougher the better. We did something that 99% of the population would love to do but are too lazy to even contemplate so take a bow... By the way for the diehards both Dor and myself are doing it all over again next saturday morning on the bike and gone by SEVEN AM. Finally Doug given that you have no potential to earn a living from cycling I woulid suggest that you would make a fortune as a sports writer so take a bow... (You have my vote for PRO and Marketing at nexty years AGM...) See you there next saturday ?!?!...

Doug, great recount of saturday morning. Respect to 'Phil the repair man' for the many puncture repairs (mental note; don't EVER hold one of those compressed gas cylinder's in your hands when filling a tyre!!!) Can't wait to go up again ?!?!?!? and just for the record Granny gear's were not used or harmed in the making of theis epic adventure. Brian I

Hi all,
I think you are right gerry, we should be proud of ourselves! I think on mornings like that though most people are afraid not to turn up as the slagging would be more painful than the cut 3 or 10 times even!!! Multy must be well sheltered as i never noticed the weather until i got on the bloody bike, and now that i know what litespeed bikes are known for i will never have an excuse not to bike on days like that in the future!!!!

So you all think you're cycling well, climbing the cut 3 times on the same stormy morning. Well you're not the only club members putting in the training you know. I myself was out on Saturday morning, although not at 6.30am. I had the sense to stay in bed till 8, eat a big breakfast and faff around the house for a couple of hours before braving the westerly winds.
It was to be my first 60km cycle and the route was a fairly simple loop from Mullingar out the N4 to the Kinnegad exit, then head west to Tyrellspass and home along the N52. Armed with a bottle of water and a solitary strawberry nutri grain bar I hit the road. It started out pretty good. I cruised all the way to Kinnegad, powering along the N4. While I was setting land speed records all I could think of was where to put all those trophies I'd be winning during the summer...but then I turned west...and faced directly in to winds from Hell.
For 20 kilometers I hit this wind head on and the further I went the harder and slower things got. This was supposed to be a triumphant step up from my usual short spin to a manly 60k, not a hard slog down some crappy country road haunted by the ghosts of gale force Lucifer himself. By Milltownpass I was actually shouting abuse at the wind. Out loud. I'd say I looked mad to any witnesses. By Rochfortbridge I was wondering how much I'd get for the bike on ebay. Half way from Rochfortbridge to Tyrellspass I almost hit an all time low:- I was cycling slower than my half marathon running pace! Then I hit the one and only hill on the whole route. It's not really a hill, more of an obstacle to the view I should be having of the midland countryside. But it took my dignity away....not once since buying the bike had this happened. Never thought it would be necessary....but this climb forced me to drop in to the granny gears...d**n this soul destroying rejected roadway! As I reached the summit of this slight rise it was really rubbed in. Across the road was an elderly gent on a high nelly actually free wheeling in to the wind.
So much for having to make room on the mantle piece for all them trophies...

L.O.L Very good colm,at least your admitting to the granny gear unlike brian ivory who hides at the back of a group and sneaks into it,you should try going with the group it is a lot easier,(well sometimes).

hmmm. just looked at the stats on this . There were 6 replies to this subject and 59 views of it!!!. So, anyone out there getting concerned that the main talents of the "Triathlon Club" are reading (59 views) and wirting (an incredible 6 messages that took longer to write than the cycle up the cut 3 times! ). we could start a new duathlon here . instead of an RBR we could have a WRW..
